Week 2, Term 3, 2020
Dear MOPS families,
Welcome to our first newsletter for the term. I trust the holiday period with your children was restful and enjoyable. It is good to start the term without a lot of the uncertainty that we experienced at the beginning of last term in relation to COVID -19. Whilst our situation here in South Australia is a comparatively healthy one, we cannot take for granted the fact that we could experience a second wave at any time. Schools across the state have been encouraged to be prepared for this possibility by having at least two weeks’ worth of work prepared just in case we are asked to return to a home schooling situation. We are all hoping this will not have to be the case but it is always better to be prepared.
All families should have received their student’s Semester One reports. Thanks to those parents that have contacted the school to arrange a time to discuss any questions in regard to these reports. As mentioned in our last newsletter, there will be a formal opportunity for further discussions to take place during Week 4 of this term when we will again be staging our three way conversations. This is a great opportunity for families, teachers and students to sit together to look at student achievement so far as well as strategies to foster further growth and development throughout the remainder of the year. Further Information will be sent home today via your children.
If you have been driving past Nicolson Avenue in recent weeks and the site for the new high school, you will see that construction is well and truly on its way. Along with the construction, community engagement about the school is also ramping up. Over the next few weeks, a series of information sessions and activities will be occurring to further inform the Whyalla community about this project. Next Wednesday students from Year 5/6/7 will have an opportunity to hear the latest information. More information will be sent out via their respective classes when it comes to hand. Governing Council representatives have been approached to form a committee to look at the naming of the new high school. I have submitted names of parents who are willing to be on this committee. A pop-up stall will be set up in Westlands on Thursday 6th August from 12:00pm-4:00pm; with the New school team, architects, builders and newly appointed Principal, Trish Richman in attendance to discuss the school, share images and footage. This is an exciting time for both the education and broader community. I will keep our MOPS community informed of future developments.
Also on the theme of high schools, Year 7 students will be taking part in numerous activities hosted by both Stuart and Whyalla High Schools as part of the transition process. Families of Year 7 students should have all the current information about these. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s Year 7 teacher.
If you have been walking in or around the school, you will have noticed some of the latest projects that are currently under way. Over the holidays a new path was installed leading into the school from the southern Lockhart Street gate, along with the relocation of the bike racks. This has now provided a more convenient entrance to our school and more parking space for staff respectively. Landscaping of this area will be taking place shortly. Construction has also begun on our new meeting room adjacent to the front office area and Library as well as our wellbeing space which is located between Rooms 14 and 15. These are exciting developments and will further enhance our existing facilities.
We are pleased to welcome a new staff member to our school. Mr Jericho John started with us this week and is taking over the Performing Arts teaching role from Miss Kee who left at the end of last term. Mr John comes to us from Adelaide and will be with us for the remainder of the school year. We are excited to have him as part of the MOPS family.
Finally, wedding bells will be ringing out across Adelaide this coming Saturday as Miss Roberts marries her fiancé Ryan. As a school community we wish them a happy and memorable day as they celebrate their commitment to each other and the next phase of their life together.
